“A poesia faz alguma coisa acontecer”: a subjetividade e a construção da identidade de mulheres negras na tradução de Nayyirah Waheed

Abstract

The poetry produced by black women still does not have the same visibility as the works of white authors, in academic environment and beyond. From these considerations, this work aims to discuss the notions of subjectivity as a tool of radicality and opposition to hegemonic values, which discredit the poetic productions produced by black women. This work presents a feminist reading, based on the considerations of black American and Brazilian feminist authors. Poetry is, in this way, the vector for the construction of identity, stem from self-definition through subjectivity. The translation of the contemporary poet Nayyirah Waheed is a guide for this discussion, that these values can transit in different sociolinguistic fields and inhabit other places, beyond the social and political field. Translation studies are also related to hegemonic and structurally racist thinking (Cf. COLLINS, 2016). In this sense, translating black female authors is also a way of expanding access to these unsubmissive readings and a possibility of reconstructing the trajectory of self-determined black women who break away from the status of “other” to become subjects.
