“Suitors”, de Pauline Kaldas: uma tradução do conto e alguns comentários sobre o processo tradutório

Abstract

In this paper, we present a translation of the short story “Suitors”, written by the Egyptian-American author Pauline Kaldas and included in the collection The Time Between Places: Stories that Weave in and out of Egypt and America. Before that, we highlight the theoretical assumptions that guided our work, mentioning and discussing opinions provided by scholars who reflect on translation and/or literature, such as Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2005), Jean-Yves Masson (2019), José Pinheiro de Souza (1998), Umberto Eco (2003), Fabio Akcelrud Durão (2016), Victor Chklóvski (2013), Paulo Bezerra (2012), and Alfredo Bosi (1988). At the end of the article, we make some comments about the translation process from which the text in Portuguese has been created, intending to justify certain linguistic and/or literary choices to overcome the challenges faced in both the original text and the very translation activity, and reach some conclusions regarding the whole exercise undertaken in relation to the translated short story.
