Abstract

The present article intends to analyse the contribution of Mário de Andrade and Lúcio Costa – two of the first major collaborators of Serviço do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional  (SPHAN) (National Service of Historic and Artistic Heritage) – in the inaugurating number of the Revista do SPHAN (Journal of SPHAN). The articles “The Chapel of Santo Antônio”, by Mário de Andrade, and “Essential Documentation”, by Lúcio Costa, are here considered to be emblematic of one of the most important aspects of SPHAN’s pioneer action: the establishment of an area of knowledge in the field of history of Brazilian architecture. The authors’ contribution will be presented within the context of the beginning of the new Service, since their previous involvement with Brazilian architecture documentation issues, in the 1920’s, until their effective engagement in the activities of the new agency.
