Urban memories of Iguape-SP project: a heritage education experience from the Urban Geography Laboratory of the University of São Paulo

Abstract

This text intends to present some results of the Urban Memories of Iguape-SP Project, developed in 2011. The cultural and extension action of the Geography Department of the University of São Paulo aimed to involve the community of the city of Iguape in the valorization of the memories and cultural heritage, as well as to record and document the memory of different social groups living in that space to give visibility and socialize popular knowledge, strengthening the link between communities and their heritage and encouraging social participation in their protection. For that, a dialogical conception of patrimonial education was used, linked to the one proposed by Paulo Freire, in which critical awareness is sought, that which inserts the subject as a subject of the world, therefore, as a liberating education.

    Geógrafo pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Mestre em Geografia Humana pela USP, quando foi bolsista da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Fapesp); mestre em Preservação do Patrimônio Cultural pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan), tendo desenvolvido as atividades práticas do programa junto ao Departamento de Patrimônio Material e Fiscalização (Depam) da autarquia. Atualmente é doutorando do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geografia Humana da USP e pesquisador convidado do Grupo Planejamento e Monitoramento de Áreas Naturais Protegidas, CNPq/Instituto Florestal do Estado de São Paulo.
