Iron bandstands from the 19th and 20th centuries in Belém (PA): transformations and recognition of meanings and values

Between the late 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, several iron bandstands were imported from Europe to Belém (PA) amid the economic prosperity generated by the rubber cycle. Eight of these buildings have remained in the city facing preservation problems caused by anthropic and weathering action and going through different kinds of transformations - in past and recent periods. Simultaneously, they have become cultural heritage, communicating many meanings and values to people. This paper aims to delineate the transformations and continuities, from the importation to the current days, and conduct a theoretical reflection on these processes in order to subsidize the conservation of the iron bandstands. The methodological approach consisted of two steps:
1) historical-documental and iconographical study; 2) public research through forms applied on-site and online. This study reaffirmed the cultural significance and identified the heritage values of these buildings.
The data obtained also indicated the limited application and relevance of the theoretical principles in the preservation of these cultural objects. These results are going to be useful to aid future interventions in being more suitable to society’s requirements.
