Abstract

The direction we take in translation tends to organize most discourses on ethics, which often revolves around the national/foreign relations and the position of the host, i.e. the one translating the foreigner into one's own language. In this sense, ethics is presented as a rapport of oneself towards the other, of translation towards the original, a hospitality, a fidelity. Henri Meschonnic, for his part, analyzes ethics at the instance of the subject, defining it in terms of a double rapport to oneself and the other, which emerges from the relationship of subjects to living. This double rapport was compared in our essay, firstly in the version, given that, in this direction, original and alterity are not on the same side; and secondly in the e/im-migrant subject, who does not separate what distance has estranged. We take as our starting point a personal narrative of migration and translation that portrays the affective rapport that the e/im-migrant subject has with the languages that enable them to live. Finally, since the ethics of translating is linked to the very concept of translation as a relation, it's this rapport that we need to question, if not the rapports themselves. Is it possible to translate in a dual ethical rapport to alterity and to the original, which, in this case, are not on the same side? And yet, how (because it's always a mode) can we be ethical with ourselves and with the other in such a way that both are constituted as subjects by/in the relation?
