This paper analyzes the agriculture of the State of Santa Catarina using the weighted factorial analysis, number of rural workers and measures of land tenure concentration in five cross-sections from 1920 to1985. Inthe State the degree of land concentration prevailing since 1920 varied from medium to high having increased in last years of the analyzed period. The number of rural workers have increased in the period and they were concentrated in the Coastal region in the beginning of the century and in the MRH Colonial do Oeste Catarinense in 1985. The transformations occurred since 1920, except 1980, were related to intensity of land exploitation associated most of the time with the animal force, family labor and cultivated pastures. The agriculture modernization was limited by farms’ characteristics and predominant soils being associated to the sugar-cane, tobacco, poultry and hogs agribusiness complex.
