A segmentação no mercado de trabalho do setor industrial de São Paulo (1889-1920)
Keywords:
labour market segmentation in the industrial sector, industrial structure, State of São Paulo economic historyAbstract
This article focuses on the relationships between, on one hand, the differences in the working conditions (wages and work duration), the composition by age and by gender, and the negotiating power of the several categories of workers, and on the other hand, the heterogeneity of technical and organizational structures of the various sectors that made up the State of São Paulo industry from 1889 to 1920. Evidence is provided to demonstrate the influence that the diversity in the technical processes and the forms of organization of firms had on differences in the labour market, mainly through the worker’s skills that were made necessary by the technical characteristics of the production process.
