The present study proposes an information retrieval and search methodology for health using Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) mapping to build sensitive search strategies. The aim was to identify best practices to organize research problems and search in specialized databases considering the limitations of information retrieval systems. Furthermore, the researchers also aimed to identify, map, and select terms and concepts to create sensitive search strategies. The researchers resorted to bibliographic research and conducted two experiments in the health area focusing on the interaction between librarians and health experts and search actions to produce technical and scientific knowledge using interoperated and mapped KOS. The National Library of Medicine Metathesaurus was utilized according to the recommendation of ISO 25964:2:2011. The results showed that the production of technical and scientific knowledge demands broad information searches; however, the limitations of information retrieval systems and various ways users conduct queries create the need for specific procedures, such as the assessment and systematization of automated mapping results, which must be submitted to duplicate elimination. Based on the results of the experiments, an information search and retrieval methodology in databases was proposed, which included the identification of agents, actions and criteria for defining research problems, and mapping and selecting terms to construct search strategies using the Metathesaurus and the systematization of results.
