Abstract

The paper investigates the ways in which the ideas of “self” and “other” are conveyed in a number of various Neo-Latin passages. It considers the dynamics of explicit and implicit identifications, together with the suggested connotations in them, and relates all of these to the intentions of the author. The paper also explores the possibilities and the limitations of the Latin language in expressing these concepts, and argues that Latin is a language that crosses boundaries and is more inclusive than is sometimes thought.
