In this article, we intend to analyze the creative process of the North American writer Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), giving special attention to the drafts of a story in prose, entitled Suicide of a (moderate) dictator (1954), where the author portrays the suicide of President Getúlio Vargas, by mixing fiction, reminiscence and fact. In this genetic study, some unique aspects of the work of Elizabeth Bishop are stressed; among them, it is emphasized the role of memory as an important mainspring of her art and the power of visual imagery that permeate her literary production.
