This paper examines the urban landscape as a communication system. Accordingly, it provides an overview of"Lei Cidade Limpa", a city ordinance designed to clean up the street-advertising clutter in São Paulo, Brazil. It also discusses Ferrara's (1996) ideas of intratextual signs and the city's visual form as a design problem, based on Lynch (1997). The text concludes by suggesting alternatives for street advertising in line with the urban context.Downloads
