Abstract

Juca Ferreira, Brazilian sociologist and politician, was Minister of Culture of Brazil between 2008 and 2011, during the presidency of Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva, and between 2015 and 2016, during the second term of Dilma Rousseff. Previously, from 2003 to 2008, he was Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, during Gilberto Gil's administration. His career in government marked the field of cultural policies, establishing the vision of culture from three guiding dimensions: symbolic, civic and economic. In addition, it coincided with the emergence of debates on regional cultural integration in Latin America and its importance for the reconfiguration of power relations in hegemonic political-diplomatic spaces. In this interview, Juca Ferreira evaluates the efforts made by Brazil during the cycle of progressive governments in Latin America (2000-2015) to promote regional integration and raise culture to the center of the political, economic and social agenda.
