Abstract

June 3, 2015: The "Ni una menos" march against gender-based violence and femicide was held in Buenos Aires and eighty other Argentine cities. Although the topic was already present in social debates, the march provides a powerful voice not only to denounce violence against women, but also to question how emotional relationships between men and women have been historically conditioned. Since her first short film, in 1995, Lucrecia Martel has focused on the situation of women and their perception of affection, as María Luisa Bemberg and Raúl de la Torre (whose film Heroína is mentioned in La niña santa) had already done. However, Martel presents factors absent in the work of previous directors: provincial life, extreme violence in the family, sexual harassment in public spaces, its links with popular culture and reticence as a narrative form of the unspoken and hidden. In 2004, La niña santa was released. In this article, I will analyze the film seen from the rupture produced by the 'Ni una menos' movement, which transformed the way we value, observe, and judge affective relationships between men and women.
