Abstract

Each historical moment is unique; however, it carries in itself its permanent tensions, in a paradox between the new and the old, resorting to new experiences without, therefore, denying all the acquired cultural baggage. Thus, this work aims to relate two distinct moments in the Brazilian History, which share common characteristics: the hygienization in early Republican Brazil and nowadays, in which President Dilma Roussef’s mandate was at stake. Since Brazil is a country with little social mobility and no substantial alterations in its political control, we will see how the interests of the upper class are developed/formed and perpetuated, making the population adhere to that ideology in favor of the elite’s private interests.
