This paper analyzes the relationship between literature characters and environment and aim to investigate how supposedly occurred the deployment of European social rhythms in Brazil at nineteenth century, taking in consideration tropical environment temporal clues and the biological rhythms point of view. For this study, some literary texts of the period (especially the work of Machado de Assis and Eca de Queiroz) were analyzed - to identify references to sleep schedules, meals, social activities and aspects of sleep; well as reading contemporary authors who discuss the construction of national identities - especially in Brazil - and till; authors investigating the theme of time - either in chronological, psychological and biological terms.
