Abstract

The work of the composer, arranger and composer Pixinguinha is one of the most important to the brazilian popular music progress during this century. The Pixinguinha´s quality of contrapunctual imprivisation and his productivity (2.000 titles) place him on the top of the popular music tradition. Pixinguinha ocupies a single place in the MPB history: a popular instrumentist who reached the status of conductor, arranger and composer, besides the invention of a style of improvisation. It is amazing Pixinguinha didn´st let followers or disciples. He didn´s even create a school. The purpose of the article is to understand his fact by linking life and work, and vice versa.
