Abstract

The Brazilian population, especially those living in a rural environment, largely mixed by different ethnic groups and cultures, has always used medicinal plants and herbal medicines, structuring a traditional knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation and became popular in urban environments. The empirical experiences
of traditional communities, associated with academic knowledge, contributed to the establishment, in Brazil, of the National Policy on Medicinal Plants and Herbal Medicines (PNPMF).
In this context, the Ministry of Health established, within the scope of the Unified Health System (SUS), the program called Living Pharmacy, whose ideological basis is based on the work carried out by professor emeritus Dr. Francisco José de Abreu Matos, from the Federal University of Ceará.
The living pharmacy should be an environment for exchanging knowledge and, at the same time, a meeting point between traditionality and other areas of human knowledge, such as sustainable agronomy, pharmacognosy, pharmacotechnics and pharmaceutical assistance, as well as the performance of doctors and from other health professionals.
In Brazil, the themes of medicinal plants, herbal medicine and living pharmacy are permeated by norms consolidated by the Ministry of Health, Ministry of the Environment, and Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, and by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). These norms aim to regulate the use of medicinal plants as genetic heritage, as well as the production of herbal medicines and their access by the Brazilian population. This undoubtedly means progress in public health in Brazil.
The objective of this report was to share the experience, carried out for more than two decades, by Nature’s Pharmacy of Jardinópolis in producing herbal medicines, based on a program that integrates tradition, through the involvement of the
community, the academy, with the technical support of universities, volunteer actions, appreciation of Brazilian biodiversity and support for public policies at municipal, state, and federal levels.
