Tourism planning needs to be done according to research showing site potential and market reality. Seeking to analyze touristy activity in Brazil, its sustainability and proposing a research agenda, a descriptive and exploratory study was done based on secondary data, published by officialdepartments. Revealing that: a) Brazilian statistics related to domestic
tourism do not show uniformity in the historical series and in the variables
that were studied; b) There is insufficient research data which can be used
as basis for actions reaching the goals established by The National Tourism Plan - PNT; c) There is a need for specific data, making it difficult to properly monitor the effects of tourist activity in the environment; and d) Four out of eight dimensions of sustainability proposed by Sachs (2002) are considered in the plan. The conclusion is the need to define a research agenda so PNT can achieve its goals.
