Abstract

The paper presents an analisis of tourism becoming one of the alternatives for sustainable development of the Amazon and goes further into the conceptual discussion of what type of tourism could in fact promote the social, economic an enviromental benefits that the Amazonian peoples are. Which type of tourism is the world ready to accept under the criteria of "sustainable"? Has this type of tourism demand and economic power to generate the results that are expected? Which kind of poverty is actually threatening the Amazon? What can be done or is being done to aproach the problem and determine the appropriate policies to be implemented?
