Abstract

Due to the lack of specificity, necropsy findings are not always enough to elucidate a causa mortis. Therefore, analysis of post mortem samples are object of major concern and the correct interpretation of data depends on the knowledge about the kinetics and toxicity mechanisms of the compound involved, as well as about pathologies related to the death. When cocaine is found in forensic samples, the basic cause of death is hard to be established by forensic toxicologists and pathologists, particularly if ethanol was ingested together with the drug. So, the aim of this paper was to review the most relevant aspects of cocaine and cocaethylene (product of transesterification of the drug with ethanol) toxicity to help forensic staff in the investigation related to this drugs.
