Abstract

It analyzes how the pragmatic semantic approach can be adopted for establishing semantic relationships in thesauri. In the context of Knowledge Organization, it describes the pragmatic approach contributions to the recommendations of ANSI/NISO Z39.19 (2005) and ISO2594-1 (2011) norms. For equivalence relationships, this contribution relates to the perception that the distinction of what was considered equal or equivalent for recall purposes in Information Retrieval is a measure that minimizes ethical implications of choosing an expression form as a preferred term and it provides greater flexibility to thesaurus. For hierarchical relationships, there is the importance of considering the conceptual differences, because if hierarchies are established only from universalist assumptions, they may become too rigid. For associative relationships, there is the importance of bibliography for identifying relationships that can guide the user to find useful information to reach his or her goals.
