The multiple faces of horror: the gothic and the weird fiction in Junji Ito

Japanese comic artist Junji Ito is much influenced by literature, as can be seen in his interviews and his work, which even includes some adaptations of literary works. However, our focus is on another form of dialogue between different media, addressing certain parallels that can be established with two literary works. This article consists of a comparative analysis between Ito’s short story Nagai Yume (Long Dream), and two horror stories: Dream of a Manikin, by Thomas Ligotti, and Der Sandmann, by E.T. A. Hoffmann. The aim is to identify resonances of horror literature in the comic artist's creations, as well as to investigate how certain “atmospheres” are transposed between different media.
