Narrative structure variations in the use of thought ballons in Comics of superheros

This paper makes an exploratory analysis with a descriptive character of the changes in textual construction and formatting of the visual elements of comic book balloons, focusing on the disappearance of the use of the thought balloons in the production of comic superhero. It provides an overview of the reasons and circumstances pointed out by the screenwriters and designers through the testimonies, interviews and publications of some designers made available on their personal blogs. It maps out how the thought balloons was being replaced by other features such as the first-person caption to avoid so-called “cheap exposure shortcuts”. Emphasizes that the changes are associated with three factors: (1) a discourse, both by readers and producers, of modernizing the construction of the text, disassociated from a childlike character that would have comics, (2) the need to bring comics closer to other consolidated artistic expressions such as the theatrical text; and (3) the maturing of its consumers.
