Abstract

Question mark, exclamation mark, and ellipses are punctuation marks that can occur solo in comics (either in speech balloons, thought bubbles, or anchored to the image). Our main corpus is formed by the comic strips of Yehuda Moon & the Kickstand Cyclery because we noticed a constant use of these unaccompanied punctuation marks. As a contrast, we turn to The essential Calvin and Hobbes (1988) by Bill Watterson and God 1, 2 and 3 by Laerte. Comparing these corpora, we will perceive punctual preferences. Cohn (2013) conceives these unaccompanied signs as upfixes (affixes), which we discuss based on the formalization of punctuation marks by Dahlet (2002; 2006) and Kleppa (2023) and Gedin's conception of multimodality in comics (2019).
