Resumen

Beliefs in science, objectivity, progress and unidirected evolution are central notions of the 19th century thinking. They are strongly influence the Brazilian literary works of that period. These works, based on prevailing anthropology and biology theories, were critical of slavery, the monarchy state and the Romanticism tendency. The article analises the realistic-naturalistic Brazilian literature of the period which presents strong traces of determinism racial theories.
