Resumo

O Fator de Crescimento do Endotélio Vascular (VEGF) desempenha importante papel regulador no desenvolvimento vascular fisiológico, sendo que tanto a diminuição nos seus níveis ou sua ausência quanto o aumento provocam danos na formação vascular sistêmica. É um fator angiogênico amplamente estudado, e em tecidos onde a angiogênese é aumentada sua expressão é consideravelmente alta. A expressão desse fator é regulada por processos transcricionais e pós-transcricionais incluindo o splicing alternativo, hipóxia, hormônios, outros fatores angiogênicos e microRNAs. Desse modo, esta revisão tem como objetivo relatar alguns dos principais mecanismos que controlam a produção do VEGF.
