Abstract

F. Furet is currently the most important and polemic French Revolution historian. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how and why he achieved this position. Thus, we discuss his professional career and examine his writings on the French Revolution between 1965 and 1989, year of the bicentennial. Our main goal is to make a detailed analysis and a critical evaluation of his most important work - Thinking the French Revolution - presenting the methods, the arguments and the propositions used by him to build up a new and original interpretation of the French Revolution, one which reduces the French Revolution to a political phenomenon and this one to a new discourse and ideology - both democratic - on power.
