The brazilian viola culture in the region of São João del-Rei, MG: analysis of trajectories

Abstract

This study intends to reflect on the culture of viola at the São João del Rei area in the second half of the century. XX. Through literature analysis specialist periodicals season and especially on the basis of guitar players and revelers reports we can trace some of the history of this instrument in the region. We identified a strong presence viola in the popular culture in the second half of the nineteenth century and a shortage of this instrument in the city in popular music practices throughout the twentieth century.
