Abstract

This article addresses a rich but seldom discussed issue regarding the documentation of Brazilian Architectural and Urban History: the postcard as a means to record urban transformations, architecture, construction; and to act as vehicle for the art of memory. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the national competition for the masterplan of Brasilia, we could find few fitting examples of the power of the postcard - to depict outstanding architecture and the evolution of the built environment - than the pictures taken from Brasilia in its early days. Here we present two distinct collections: the former shows the actual completion of Brasilia's main buildings; the latter depicts equally precious images from Brasilia's first decade. Seen as whole, these rarely published pictures ultimately show how this humble, old-fashioned media could act as a tool to study the continuity and change in the evolution of Brasilia.
