This article investigates the propositions for the masculine and the exercise of masculinities in Livro de sogra, by Aluísio Azevedo (1895). Considering the carnivalizing content of this work, we are interested in observing that, in giving voice to a narrator, the mother-in-law, the work promotes certain tensions in the models of masculinity, reaffirming, finally, the idealized, mobile and unattainable character of paradigmatic masculinity.
