This article presents a historically oriented reflection on the elaboration and presence of textbooks in Portuguese language teaching. Complementing this reflection, a case study is established from an analysis of one textbook, considered in its materiality and inscription at a specific moment in the historical trajectory of language teaching. The Historiography of Linguistics is the theoretical-methodological field that guides this text. This field is concerned with the description, analysis and interpretation of historical and social elements that are present in the elaboration, difusion and reception of linguistic ideas. It is understood, therefore, that it is possible to describe and narratively interpret a history of language teaching and the production of didactic material. This history can lead us to a broader understanding of the modes of historical presence of a knowledge produced especially in function of its pedagogical and didactic nature.
