Drawing from Mikhail Bakhtin’s main texts on laughter (2010[1965]; 2013[1963]; 2017[1970-1971]; 2019[1965]), this article aims to answer two questions: (i) how can we assert the existence of a connection between the laughter set in the context of medieval popular and comic culture and the contemporary laughter? and (ii) how can we locate, describe, and analyze laughter in discursive terms in a corpus? To this end, the Bakhtinian theory is confronted with texts by Sírio Possenti on humor (1991; 2003; 2007; 2018), which generates a dialogical (re)reading that traces bridges between the Bakhtinian reflections on laughter at its maximum historical scope and the various forms of contemporary humor, as characterized by Possenti. Through this theoretical intersection, a way of understanding humor is proposed as a discursive phenomenon, as well as the disposition of its contemporary manifestations: the distinction between typically humoristic utterances/genres and carnivalized utterances/genres. Lastly, this reflection raises potential research problems to be explored by future analyzes of contemporary humoristic corpora.
