The present article investigates the Portuguese poet António Botto's search for legitimacy by analyzing the strategies he used to promote himself as a successful writer. Thus, through research in the Brazilian press, we reflect on the repercussion of his stay in Brazil (1947-1959), since the transatlantic crossing represented for the poet the possibility of resuming the prestige of a recognized writer, a place that had already declined in the Portuguese literary circle. To this end, we evaluate Botto's efforts in the construction of his own literary trajectory, in which he continuously mixed real facts with imagined ones, revealing a great capacity for self-invention.
