About known landscapes and anonymous bodies
photographic memories of the Mediterranean migratory flow

In the last thirty years, a series of journalistic photographs that portray the drama of Africans and Middle Easterners attempting (and usually failing to) to cross the Mediterranean Sea has built memories on the issue of migration. This article analyzes some of those photos to discuss how the construction of memory, based on a certain politics of testimony, may be able to associate the duties of memory and the duties of civil action. Special attention is paid to images that establish a relation between well-known landscapes (of the sea and of the beach) and anonymous bodies (of immigrants whose identities and trajectories remain indefinite) that seem to destabilize them, a relationship marked by the notion of boundary – serving to separate, but also to open up a possibility of unification of the familiar and the strange.
