Abstract

A central figure in late nineteenth century British culture, writer and designer William Morris (1834-1896) also contributed to art criticism. In “The Revival of Architecture”, first published in 1888 and here translated into Portuguese, Morris presents a brief history of the British Neo-Gothic, after which he exposes the essays main thesis, to say, that the vitality and popularity of the Gothic depended on a specific kind of society, socially organized in a wholly different manner than that which intended to recreate the style in another age.
