This paper aims at considering the Italian translation of Jorge Amado’s novel, Capitães da areia, made by Dario Puccini in 1953, placing it in the historical and ideological context of Italy ’50s dominated by the conflict between the Communist Party and the Christian Democrats. The translation of the text, in fact, bears the marks of an ideological compulsion that folds the Amado’s novel, through excisions and cuts of whole chapters, linguistic simplifications and rewriting of significant passages from the original text, in the patterns of socialist realism, and therefore, of a literature characterized by strong educational and exemplar contents.
