Comparative analysis of two translations of Lorca's Yerma into Portuguese

Based on Derrida’s studies on translation (1998, 1999, 2001, 2006), we analyzed two translations into Brazilian Portuguese, by Cecília Meireles (1963) and Marcus Mota (2000), of the dramatic work Yerma, by Federico García Lorca. We perform a comparative analysis of these translations, questioning the possible similarities and/or differences between them; thus, we emphasize the translation choices at the level of language and their impact on the dramatic and poetic tone of the text, such as: textual deletion or addition and its effects; names and designations of characters; and the translation choices related to lexical selection, grammatical and syntactic-semantic structures, and their effects. The comparative analysis of the translation choices made by Meireles (1963) and by Mota (2000) shows transformations in the translated texts, including the way they construct different images of Lorca's work.
