This article presents a theoretical discussion about knowledge production in psychiatric nursing and mental health and these areas contributions to practice in services. Journal publications from nursing and related areas, published 1980 and 2001, are consulted to recover knowledge and practices constructed in the theoretical field and in the practical sphere of basic care and its interface with mental health.
