The present study discusses argumentation and its use in teaching Mathematics to students in the first year of Elementary School. We sought to answer the following question: "can the use of mathematical argumentation contribute to student learning, both in mathematics and argumentation?" The methodology consisted of using argumentation to analyze its influence on mathematical literacy. Part of the research was developed over a period of 60 days, with a focus on studying numbers in different contexts, proposing moments of dialogue, discussion, and reflection through questions asked by the teacher, instigating and analyzing the students' oral expression during the study of contents. As a result, it was possible to observe, in the students' reports, significant interaction in dialogue with the teacher and colleagues, the reorganization of ideas – after hearing other opinions –, and the students' rational thinking, which indicated an understanding of the mathematical concept under study.
