This article aims to analyze how and to what extent argumentation can contribute to the construction of knowledge during teaching and learning processes within the English language subject in adult education. For this purpose, we have used discursive-argumentative categories of epistemic nature (Compiani, 1996; Brum, 2015; Halliday; Matthiessen, 2014), in the linguistic dimension, as well as dialogical and monological categories (Mateus, 2016; De Chiaro; Leitão, 2005), in the discursive dimension, as analytical resources. As a result, we have concluded that the argumentative process established between teachers and students exhibits a more dialogical argumentative nature than a monological one.
