Abstract

Muscular training effect with weights varying continuous and intermittent load in soccer (football) players. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effect of muscular exercise training with weights varying continuous and intermittent load. This is a study covering twenty soccer players with ages ranging from 18 to 20 (junior category) before and after 12 weeks of physical muscular training. They were all submitted to maximum load tests through a repetition of the knee extensors muscular group, by using the Leg Press exercise in horizontal position with equipment (model Cybex, USA). They were divided into two groups: group I (continuous) and group II (intermittent). The exercises were performed twice a week on alternate days. The group I players underwent continuous training while those belonging to group II only trained intermittently. The players whose training was continuous carried out 3 sets of 12 repetitions at 70% and soon after a 2-min-long recovery, they performed 3 sets of 25 repetitions at 50%. During the same training session, the players who trained intermittently carried out 3 sets of 12 repetitions at 70% and 3 sets of 25 repetitions at 50% alternately. In other words, they carried out a repetition at 70% followed by another at 50%, and so on. Recovery between each repetition for both forms of work ranged from 30 to 60 seconds. The following results were recorded: the strength values in the knee muscular extensors reached by group I were 132.0 ± 4.0 kg and 145.0 ± 5.0 kg with a 10% gain (p < 0.05) and group II reached values of 131.0 ± 7.0 kg and 161.0 ± 9.0 kg with a 23% gain (p < 0.05). When we compared the differential delta between the two forms of work, the intermittent training was 11% greater (p < 0.05). In conclusion, both forms of training proved their efficacy by increasing the muscular strength. The intermittent form, however, seems to adjust it self better to the characteristics of movement requirements by soccer players during a match.
