Abstract

Objective: To identify the relationship between the functional independence measure and the cognitive and behavioral profile of a group of adult subjects with Cerebral Palsy. Methods: Eighteen institutionalized patients who were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (12 males, 6 females) and their respective care-givers participated in the study. The data collection techniques used were the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence (TONI-3), the Adult Behavior Checklist 18-59 (ABCL), and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Results: The total score of the FIM showed negative correlations with the anxiety problems scale of ABCL (rho = -0.511, p = 0.030) and positive correlations with the TONI-3 (rho = 0.540, p = 0.021). Some behavioral disturbances of the ABCL were negatively correlated with the TONI-3; for example, the Attention Problems scale (rho = -0.459, p = 0.056) and the Isolation scale (rho = -0.545, p = 0.019). The average of the motor performance values was 35.88, 28.5 for cognitive performance, and 64.38 for overall. Conclusions: There was a correlation between behav-ioral problems, functional independence measure, and cognitive abilities. The results can be used to guide the care-givers and the institution staff in the planning of rehabilitation programs for the researched patients.
