Abstract

This study explores an approach to the terms of a relationship between two realities achieved having as background the process of European integration, and conceived for dealing with problems primarily arising from differences and discrepancies among Member States of the European Union. One of those realities is the initiative of 1985 that generated the "Schengen Area", and the other is the mechanism of enhanced cooperation established in 1997. Given the persistence of those mechanisms up to nowadays, the study seeks to contribute for assessing the terms, namely in what refers to time, of the true extent and relevance of significant factors of separation among Member States of the European Union.
