Abstract

Since classical antiquity both architecture and monumentality constitute a vehicle – both official and extra-official – for the transmission of ideas through both formal and symbolical aspects. These, in turn, are specifically chosen for such purposes, as testifies Vitruvius in his architectural manual. It is not unusual in the Roman world for an event such as a triumph or an anniversary to be celebrated by restoring or dedicating a monument, usually aiming to build a symbolical connection in the social space between the object, the event, and the person performing the dedication. Given that coinage is also a vehicle of ideas – albeit a strictly official one – it constitutes a tool with which to shape the memory surrounding the commemoration event through its iconography. This article aims to tackle some aspects of monumental coinage in respect to the construction of memory in association with the city and its monuments.
